Yesterday was a solid day.
By solid, I mean simple. And good. It’s the kind of day that holds nothing extraordinary and nothing horrifying. It’s just a day. A day in the life. A day in my life.
Yesterday I woke up later than I would have liked and started off by working on an essay. Then I started working on Geometry. I hate Geometry and yesterday my hatred was no different, but I got the lesson done before I had to leave for work, so that was good. Work was full of friendly customers, colorful drinks, and fun conversations. Almost as soon as I got off my shift and came home we were on the road again for a basketball game where I got to sit with one of my close friends and catch up and laugh. When we came home my brothers and I ate a snack and then I did my nightly Bible reading before switching out the lights and going to bed.
Yup, nothing extraordinary happened yesterday, that’s for sure.
But it was a day that leaves you energized, excited, and refreshed. It’s what I call a Solid Day.
Which makes me remember… it’s easy to forget to enjoy these days and get caught up in The Dreaded Someday.
‘Someday I’ll publish my book!’ ‘Someday I’ll meet someone.’ ‘Someday my parents will let me do this!’ ‘Someday I’ll…”
You get the idea. It goes on and on forever. Guess what? Someday is never going to get here. It’s like that weird scene in Alice and Wonderland where she meets the Queen and the Queen tells her “jam tomorrow and jam yesterday but never jam today”. That’s kind of the way we look at our lives. We never stop to enjoy the present moment, usually because we’re thinking of how much fun we had yesterday or how much fun we’re going to have tomorrow.
Whether your definition of fun relies on workplace success, social fulfillment, or something else entirely, I’m sure you can relate. We all do this.
Which is why we need simple, solid days. And which is why these simple, solid days are the most important and the most fulfilling.
You need to have a mediocre day every now and then full of simple pleasures like work, school, or hobbies. Not every day needs to be a game changer.
Live. Live faithfully. Live today.
These simple, solid days matter most of all.
